My Korean roommate just made a dinner for me, saying that is the traditional food for Korean Lunar New Year. It was quite simple which made with rice cakes, dumplings, minced eggs and dried seaweed.

It was a bowl with decorated toppings when I came out from my room. I was so looked forward for it since it smelled like the Korean restaurant! When I put my spoon and chopsticks into the soup, I was flipping the rice cakes and dumplings, mixing with the minced toppings. That was an important moment since I really like rice cakes and dumplings!!!!

We don’t have the dining table in the basement so we just had the dinner in her room. She just told me it’s called “tteock gook”, which means rice cakes and dumplings in soup. Then I just mentioned that I’ve been to Korea about 13 years ago. All my memories about Korea will be the food, the roast pork on the table and the ginseng chicken soup.

I didn’t know how to describe the ginseng chicken soup at the beginning, instead of saying out the name I just told her they put some sticky rice into the spring chicken, cooking in the broth with something like chinese medicine. Both of us didn’t know how to say the ginseng. I just said that is the root of some plant.

Oh…. “sum guy ton”(pronounce). Wow, it sounds very similar to our chinese both in mandarin or cantonese “參雞湯”.

We also found out that there is the Korean food ” Cold noodles” pronounce almost the same as both mandarin or cantonese as well, sounds like “lung main” (冷面). I was not sure if it’s really a Korean food, but the way for decorating toppings of cold noodles was quite similar to the one she made just now, but more colourful with minced cucumber and radish.

She said yes and it supposed to be with some beef and tastes a bit sour.

Exactly!! I was kidding, saying that now I’ve confirmed with a Korean about cold noodles and yes it is real korean food!!

The one we ate today was no meat as well since she has been a vegetarian for 7 months, just right before she arrived Canada half year ago. I was curious that why she suddenly changed her life style. Is it the same as my mum who because of the religion?

She answered me that because of sympathy and she was thinking about that for quite long. However, her mum doesn’t like her idea at all. Also, there are not such many options as Canada’s in Korea. She is happy to be here because being a vegetarian works in this country.

Yes there are many negative points for only eating veggies. But she was just saying that she felt happy and positive. And she didn’t promise to be vegetarian forever.

She’s probably right. If there was really anything wrong in the future she can change the way. Nothing is forever.

I learned a new word called “interdependent”. I’ve heard this word from the Podcast call “DAILY Boost” in Spotify.

In the very first beginning I thought he talked about “independent” since he mentioned his own experience ” When my kids grown up and  being adult, I just sent them out since I don’t want to have roommates “.

What? He called their kids “roommates”. But it kind of hit my heart since I don’t even want to have kids in my life……

After that he just mentioned that how normal the “share” in current society. It just like a fashion now that we have to share something so that the relationships are built up. Because everyone wants to be together with the right person, or right groups.

However, he just totally denied what he said just now. Or I can say he wants us to think about in different direction that we should be who we are, be individual and then get the power from each other, because we can be interdependent.

Exactly.
